Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.

Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.

Police report they were notified late on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.

The substance had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.

Officers then found many other smeared cars and house walls in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Law enforcement say preliminary tests suggest the liquid was likely human bodily fluid.

"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; authorities are currently not informed of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they stated.

Local authorities stated they were attempting "to resolve the case" and have asked to the residents for information.

An important official commented the incident made him speechless and needed to be resolved promptly.

"This event affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing violent incident five years ago," he stated on a platform, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a assailant focusing on residents of migrant background in February 2020.
